MMI Asks for a Little Jingle

Sledge Named Vice President of Operations

Picture2After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in hospitality management in 1989, Scott Sledge began management training for MMI Hotel Group in Nashville, TN at the Cabot Lodge—Nashville.  He has served several MMI hotels in a variety of positions including Sales Manager, Front Office Manager and Assistant General Manager.  In 1994, he was promoted to General Manager at the Cabot Lodge-Jackson North in Ridgeland.

Expanding beyond the Cabot Lodge brand, Sledge assumed additional responsibilities in a dual role as Regional Director of Operations overseeing MMI operations in Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana in 1999.  As Joe Morgan reduces his responsibilities out of his Gainesville office, Sledge has expanded his support of properties into the Florida market as well.

We look forward to the coming years and opportunities that our hotels will provide for associates and guest alike.

 

Joe Morgan Retires After 47 Years with MMI

Joe MorganForty Seven years ago Joe Morgan left the University of Southern Mississippi and began a career in hospitality.  He had no industry training and little if any work experience that might have given some indication of his capabilities for this type work.  Regardless, he convinced Earle Jones and Frank Peyton that he would work hard and be a positive force within a very young organization, Mississippi Management, Inc.

From that humble beginning, Joe was both unstoppable and unflappable.  He rose through the ranks serving in every capacity imaginable within the MMI organization.  He has led the organization’s operations for the vast majority of his career.  I even had the pleasure of serving as one of his General Managers in the early 1980s.  I suppose what I marvel most is his ability to understand and manage such a diverse, multi-generational workforce.  He is an amazing manager of people.

By now you have likely guessed that something is up.  And yes, Joe Morgan plans on retiring at the end of this year.  Joe and I have discussed retirement for many years, but always at his insistence.  He said that he wanted it to be his decision.  Two years ago he said he was ready.  He didn’t factor in the possibility that I might ask him to remain a bit longer, but gladly acquiesced to a longer tenure.

Though Joe will relinquish the majority of his responsibilities, I don’t think he is quite ready to go cold turkey.  So we plan on utilizing him on a more limited basis with specific opportunities.

Going forward, operations will be divided between Scott Sledge and Micajah Sturdivant.  With big shoes to fill, Scott will add all limited service hotels in Florida to his existing group with the Crowne Plaza and the King & Prince reporting to Micajah Sturdivant.  Joe will maintain an association with the company overseeing special projects throughout 2011.

MMI Welcomes William Carey University to the Family

MMI Dining Systems is honored to welcome a new addition to the family of properties served by our associates. William Carey University, a private college located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, will begin receiving MMI’s hospitality on July 1, 2010. The addition of this account is the result of the sincere service we have been invited to provide at comparable colleges. A large congratulations goes to Cynde Houston, specifically, for her commitment to the MMI Dining Systems family as she delivers on our promises to our partners. We know that William Carey will have the same support.

MMI Announces Employees Promotions and Hire

Lindsay Hamm was named the area director of sales for Mississippi Management Incorporated (MMI) Hotel Group and represents the Hilton Garden Inn Madison in Madison, the Cabot Lodge-Jackson North in Ridgeland and the Cabot Lodge Millsaps in Jackson near Millsaps College. Hamm is in charge of all external sales efforts for these Jackson area facilities. Hamm’s primary responsibilities for all three properties include increasing hotel revenues by meeting with corporate accounts, individuals or other markets in a defined area to develop and establish new accounts. Hamm also maintains existing accounts in order to promote the hotel and secure additional sales.

Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Airport Opens After Renovation

InterContinental Hotels Group today announced that the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Airport has opened after undergoing a recent renovation. The 317-room property is the larger of only two fullservice hotels in the Jacksonville airport area.

“We are excited about the recent renovations that have taken place at our hotel,” said Mark Kane, general manager, Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Airport. “These improvements, along with being the largest and newest hotel near the Jacksonville airport, will allow us to provide an upscale guest experience for both business and leisure travelers visiting the city.”

The Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Airport has 315 guestrooms and 2 suites all well appointed with 37” flatscreen TVs, granite countertops, and many additional upgraded features. Guests have access to a variety of amenities including complimentary wi-fi in the guestrooms and public spaces, indoor/outdoor heated pool, fitness center, business center, same-day laundry and dry cleaning. The hotel has three dining offerings, including Rainforest Lounge, Savannah Bistro Restaurant, and Biscotti’s Internet Café.

“This hotel offers exceptional meeting and banquet space to cater to guests visiting the property for small-to medium-sized events,” said Gina LaBarre, vice president, Brand Delivery, the Americas, IHG. “The location of the hotel is convenient for business travelers arriving at the Jacksonville airport as well as leisure guests visiting nearby attractions.”

The Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Airport is nearby a number of destinations including historic St. Augustine, Amelia Island and world-renowned golf courses and beaches. Guests departing on Carnival Cruise ships can also enjoy a short ride to the terminal.

The hotel has more than 8,000 square feet of flexible, upscale meeting space, which includes a 2,900 square foot ballroom. The property, located at 14670 Duval Road, is owned and managed by MMI Hotel Group, Inc., and under a license agreement with a company in the InterContinental Hotels Group.
