Home2 Story Flies Around the World

Home2 Suites St Simons Island, GA continues to receive global recognition for its unique setting attached to a newly constructed FBO at McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport (KSSI).  The 88-suite hotel is just over a year old, but already claiming great praise for its finishes and features.

Aviation International News recently completed a FBO spotlight on Golden Isles Aviation.

Well Deserved Recognition

More than 350 attended the inaugural Golden Isles Hospitality Celebration last night as a time to recognize individuals, businesses and other organizations for their contributions to Glynn County’s tourism industry.  Eight awards were given including The Behind the Scenes Award which honors an individual who works tirelessly as a champion of tourism with little recognition.  It went to MMI’s own Connie Towns, for her 40 years in housekeeping at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort.  (We knew the judges would have been crazy to consider anyone else!)

A native of Glynn County, Connie has worked in The King and Prince Resort’s Housekeeping Department for four decades, and now serves as the department manager. Connie has always known that a big part of the guest experience is the hotel accommodations – their home away from home. Her passion for making that “home” the best it can be has helped bring countless tourists to The King and Prince throughout her years of service. Some say that a smile is the most important part of a hospitality professional’s uniform. Connie’s love for her job and her co workers shines through in the the bright smile and positive attitude with which she greets everyone she encounters. Housekeeping is a difficult job on both body and mind. It takes a high energy individual to succeed in that field, and Connie’s enthusiasm inspires the housekeeping team to take pride in their hard work.

Connie’s reliability and work ethic make up the cornerstone of her success, and set a great example for the entire King and Prince team in their goal to provide excellent service with Southern hospitality.

New Year. New Projects.

With the beginning of a new year comes new opportunities for MMI to spread the warmth of hospitality to more guests and team members in new markets across the Southeast.  It is exciting to share a bit of information about the various projects in our development pipeline including:

– Hotel Indigo, Hattiesburg, MS (opening summer 2018)

– Hampton Inn & Suites, Saraland, AL (opening winter 2018)

– The Cotton House Hotel, Cleveland, MS (opening spring 2019)

– to-be-named Overton Square hotel, Memphis, TN (opening spring 2020)

These four projects demonstrate the range of capabilities the MMI family is skilled at executing on behalf of the assets’ owners.  Franchised.  Independent.  Select-Service.  Full-Service.  MMI Hotel Group can confidently say that we do it all by building on the legacy of sincere interest in our people and how we all relate to trends in travel patterns, customer preferences, and a keen ear for local intelligence.

We are excited to announce that Dave Jenner has accepted the role of Chief Financial Officer of MMI Hospitality Group.  For the first time in a long time, we have chosen a candidate outside of the MMI family who we believe respects our corporate culture while bringing industry insight and fresh perspective to our executive team in the Home Office.  Dave’s first day with MMI will be Monday, December 4, 2017.

Dave comes to us after growing Interstate Hotels & Resorts, the nation’s largest hotel management company, 10x and taking it public, serving in various roles at Gaylord Opryland and overseeing finance at The Atlantis in The Bahamas.  We are excited to build on Dave’s experience as our various business units explore new ways of working and growth opportunities.

Mike Hart’s title will change to Senior Vice President – Finance for MMI Hospitality Group effective January 1, 2018.  Thereafter, he will be focused on our founding families’ investments while sharing his many years of experience in the MMI CFO role.  Everyone recognizes that Dave has big shoes to fill following Mike in the role of CFO.

Once Dave gets settled into his new office in Flowood, he will shadow Mike’s work through year-end and then begin to reach out and introduce himself to the larger MMI family of team members.

Opening a Hotel Can Be Tricky

Anything that has to be started afresh requires a “little more effort” than that is already existing and running.  It is very true in case of a hotel.  Opening of any hotel requires that “little more” as this involves the needs of operational expertise, systems expertise, back office expertise and marketing expertise before starting of operations.  Coordinated efforts of all these areas of expertise make it easier to the opening of a hotel.  Many non-hotelier owners do not understand the importance of back of the house and makes lot of compromises. This results in various problems at a later stage.  The owner only looks at the beauty of the lobby and (if applicable) restaurant, but, not kitchen or stores.  Kitchen cannot deliver to restaurant unless they are well equipped.   Back office is the backbone of the hotel without which front office cannot exist.
It is very important to understand the needs of the hotel before even the construction begins.  There are specific needs in the construction of a hotel, mainly Security and Safety needs.  Infrastructural requirement in a hotel are different from normal buildings, this includes HVAC, drainage system, garbage disposal, Fire alarm, sprinkler system etc.  Understanding of these requirements is also very important for opening of a hotel.

If you are looking to develop a hotel soon, MMI Hotel Group has the expertise to open your project’s doors to an environment that is ready and able to receive guests who will desire to return again and again.

Keeping It Personal

In our transaction-driven culture, real hospitality rings true when service is exceeded.  The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort remains an example where renovations can be completed that update the aesthetic, but bring its guests along with the transformation.  As an independent hotel and resort owners and operator, MMI Hotel Group is keenly focused on studying the attributes of its properties and the people with whom their properties resonate.  This is in part due to their longtime involvement in the independent hotel brand business and their personal interest in the experiences they create for others.
